Pete Buttigieg, said the little-known 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Ind. in an interview Sunday, as vice president Mike Pence has become a "cheerleader of the porn star presidency" and asked loudly when the former Indian governor "stopped believing in the scripture" and began to believe in Trump.

The reference "porn star" is an apparent shot at Trump's alleged foreign affair with the former porn star Stormy Daniels, whom the president has denied. Buttigieg told CNN's Jake Tapper in Austin states that Pence's "interpretation" of scripture is different from his.

"My understanding of the scripture is that it is about protecting the stranger and the prisoner and the poor and that idea," he said. "That's what I get in the gospel when I'm in church, and he has much more to do with sexuality … and a certain picture of justice."

Buttigieg, who is in second level of democratic candidates for president, is a Rhodes teacher who was elected mayor of his hometown in 2011 at the age of 29, making him the youngest mayor of an American city with at least 100,000 inhabitants. A lieutenant in the Navy Reserve, he earned a trip to Afghanistan in 2014.

Buttigieg raised his national profile with a failed 2017 race for Democratic National Committee Chairman and said the party needed a new start. He withdrew from the race before a vote when it became clear that he had no support to win.

During his campaign for another period, Buttigieg appeared as gay in a column in the local newspaper. He continued to win re-election with 80 percent of the vote. In 2018, three years to the day after the column ran, he married his husband, high school teacher Chasten Glezman.
