Narcos season four dropped yesterday (Friday, November 16) on Netflix. All 10 episodes are available to stream and download via the site. Narcos: Mexico follows the rise of the Mexican drug trade in the 1980s and viewers are wondering who El Azul (played by Fermin Martinez) is and who was head of the Sinaloa Cartel that he was part of.

Who is El Azul?

El Azul is a former Mexican drug lord.

His full name is Juan José Esparragoza Moreno

His nickname, El Azul translates to The Blue One in English.

He was originally a member of the Dirección Federal de Seguridad, a Mexican police agency. There, he befriended corrupt police commanders.

He then joined the Guadalajara Cartel, a drug trafficking organisation set up by Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo, Ernesto Fonseca Carrillo and Rafael Caro Quintero.

On March 11, 1986, El Azul was arrested following the murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, carried out by the Guadalajara Cartel. He was arrested for drug trafficking charges and for his alleged participation in the murder of Camarena.

El Azul did not admit to the charges against him. However, he was sentenced to seven years and two months behind bars. He fulfilled his sentence was released in 1993.

When El Azul was freed, he joined the Juárez Cartel which was controlled by the Carrillo Fuentes family and headed by Amada Carrillo Fuentes.

He was the operational chief of the Juárez cartel and then became second-in-command.

He then joined the Sinaloa cartel, headed by Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

El Azul is currently wanted by the US under its Narcotic Rewards Program. It is offering a $5million reward (£3.9 million) for information about his whereabouts.

In Mexico, he is in the list of the 37 most-wanted drug lords.

However, in June 2014 he reportedly died of a heart attack in his home. His death has never been officially confirmed.

Who was the head of the Sinaloa cartel?

The head of the Sinaloa cartel was Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

El Chapo translates to “shorty” in English.

He became Mexico’s top drug kingpin in 2003 after the arrest of his rival Osiel Cárdenas Guillén of the Gulf Cartel.

The United States Department of the Treasury considered him to be the: “most powerful drug trafficker in the world.”

The Sinaloa Cartel trafficked multi-tonne cocaine shipments from Columbia, through Mexico and into the United States.

The Sinaloa Cartel also trafficked methamphetamine, marijuana, ecstasy and heroin.

El Chapo escaped from prison twice. During 2015 he was able to escape from a maximum security prison through a tunnel that led from his shower to a construction site.

He was recaptured in January 2016 and was extracted to the United States in January 2017 where is currently awaiting trial on criminal charges related to his leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel.
